Mike Piché’s approachable nature belies his fierce dedication to delivering great modern design. As the 2013 AIA Colorado Young Architect of the Year, he brings the benefits of critical thinking and a deeper dialogue to Studio B’s demanding design culture. Through active listening, suspending judgment, taking in the larger picture, and studying what is happening around him before commenting, Mike is able to connect a project’s larger vision with the details that will manifest it.

Mike’s analytical inquiry into what actually drives each client’s ideas and concerns allows him to empathize and understand their genuine needs. This results in well-rounded, thoughtful modern design solutions. His ability to ask the right questions [and occasionally play the devil’s advocate] honed over the last decade of practice, helps Studio B achieve the best possible outcome. This, along with his professionalism, responsiveness and ability to truly ‘hear’ his clients, makes Mike an invaluable contributor to the team.

But his talent doesn’t end there. Mike’s deft use of computer graphics and modeling tools, hand-sketches and model building help communicate and clarify complex design concepts in a simple, yet elegant way. As well, his love of drawing [pencil and charcoal], oil painting and the creative arts in general, allows him to engage in a wide variety of artistic endeavors both at work and at home. When away from the studio, Mike can be found on the snowboard slopes, mountain trails or a favorite river near Aspen fly-fishing.

Mike was raised in Boulder, Colorado and moved to Aspen after securing his undergraduate degree in Environmental Design from the University of Colorado in 2001. He then moved to Michigan to complete his Masters in Architecture from the University of Michigan. Mike graduated in 2004 and returned to Aspen to join Studio B where he enjoys the firm’s diversity and quality of work, its highly collaborative process and culture of trust in the talent and input of young architects—all attributes that fuel his creativity and keep him passionately engaged.
