Perched on an alpine bench above the Animas River valley outside Durango this residence projects out of the hillside toward 360 degree views of the San Juan Mountains. The sloping topography informs the concept of a single linear form occupying the site to provide multiple experiences of the landscape and majestic views in both the horizontal and vertical axis. The residence rests on the site’s natural topographic bench, and is kinked as a response to the contours allowing the architecture to rest quietly within the landscape. This bent form allows for the residents to experience the panoramic views of the site in a directed procession through the interior spaces. Each room has views unique to their own spaces, while the experience of the directed views to the eastern peaks and Electra Lake to the south become evident on the outdoor veranda which wraps the eastern side of the house with direct walk-out access to the land. Two planar datum at the roof and floor frame a binary system of two horizontal lines floating above the landscape, further emphasizing the deferment of the architecture to the landscape. The building adopts Miesian panoramic qualities and spatial articulation, eschewing the typical excess of form and materials typically found in mountain architecture; allowing the beauty of the site to take precedence.
